SO YOU THINK YOU CAN BUILD...

Please read ALL THE INFORMATION below before downloading the documents (red boxes on the right hand side of the page).

There are three (3) parts to the Skill Builder Application:

  1. Application Form (once completed, needs to be handed in to Scotty)

  2. Pay It Forward/Random Acts of Kindness (PIF/RAK) Assignment (once completed, needs to be handed in to Scotty)

  3. Reference Form x 2 (a form needs to be given to 2 different South Carlton teachers)

On the APPLICATION FORM you will be asked a little a bit about yourself and provided with an opportunity to review the time commitment of being a skill builder. Please read this sheet carefully with a parent (or guardian) and have them sign the form to indicate that as a family you have discussed the obligations that you (and your family) would be taking on if you are selected to be a builder.

You will also need to complete the PAY IT FORWARD/RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS (PIF/RAK) ASSIGNMENT. We are asking you to plan and execute two (2) “Pay It Forward” or “Random Acts of Kindness” to help people within the South Carleton High School community. One PIF/RAK should be executed individually (by yourself) and the second should be completed as a group with 1-2 other people (maximum of 3 per group). Please note that the other individuals in the group need to be South Carleton students, however they do not need to be going through the builder application process. As an organization we have 5 core values: Hardworking, Taking Initiative, Walking the Talk, Being Inclusive, and having Positive Energy. Please write a short reflection on how your individual PIF/RAK illustrated one of these 5 core values.

The final part of the application includes printing out the TEACHER REFERENCE FORMS.  One form needs to be delivered to two different South Carleton teachers. Please choose one teacher that knows you academically (through classes) and another one that knows you through extra-curricular activities. They will be asked to complete and submit the form directly to Scotty.

All of the different components need to completed in order for your application to be considered.  Please note that the APPLICATION and PIF/RAK assignment must be handed in to Scotty in Guidance no later than 2:30pm on Friday, February 27, 2015.

First a Word From the Builders...
Today is the big day! Okay, so you have had time to think about the fun you had at camp, but now it is time to decide if you are up to the task of building camp! It is really important that you think long and hard about your decision about whether or not to apply to become a builder. You should really be taking the next few days to think it over, because it is a HUGE commitment. Think about what it means to be a builder, and whether or not that is what you want. Even if you don't think you'll make it because you've only been to one camp or you couldn't make it to the latest one, hand it in anyway, because then at least we know you're interested. If you have any questions about the application process, feel free to come to Guidance and talk with Scotty.

Next a Word from the Advisors...
First you need to think seriously about applying for this job. Coming to camp as a delegate is a lot of fun and we know that you have a great time, but being a builder is a really different experience. Being a builder is about working very hard to create an amazing weekend for the delegates. It is about service.

It takes a lot of work to make the weekend come together. We will begin the planning of next year's camp in May. Builders work on various things over the course of the summer and once school starts up in the fall, we go full out until camp weekend. You are expected to do all of this, plus maintain your grades. It can be very demanding. Builders must be creative problem-solvers, team players, and willing to step out of their comfort zones when new opportunities present themselves. We value initiative, co-operation, individuality and hard work.

If the above excites you, and doesn’t scare you away then we would welcome your APPLICATION. You will also need to complete the attached PAY IT FORWARD/RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS (PIK/RAK) assignment. Please note that the APPLICATION and PIF/RAK assignment must be handed in to Scotty in Guidance no later than 2:30pm on Friday, February 27, 2015.

After you have submitted your completed forms, it will take us a while to process them and make decisions about who will be invited to join the team. Please be patient with us. It is a very difficult decision and we really put a lot of time into it. We don't anticipate having a decision for several weeks after the application deadline.

DARE YOU TO MOVE!
